Deshauna Barber-Echols
Deshauna Barber is a lifelong advocate for service members and veterans, a decorated Army veteran, international motivational speaker, and the founder of Women Veterans for Change. Coming from a proud military family, both of her parents served in the U.S. Army, and all three of her siblings, including herself, also joined the military. This deep-rooted connection to military service has fueled her unwavering commitment to supporting and advocating for those who have served, especially women veterans. Through Women Veterans for Change, she leads the charge in amplifying the voices of women veterans, raising awareness of their unique challenges, and providing swift emergency financial assistance to those in crisis.
In 2019, Deshauna made history as the youngest President and CEO of the Service Women’s Action Network (SWAN), where she fought for policy reform on Capitol Hill to improve resources for servicewomen and female veterans. With 11 years of military service, she understands firsthand the barriers women in uniform face both during and after their service and has committed her life to ensuring they receive the recognition, support, and opportunities they deserve.
A STEM graduate and leadership expert, Deshauna holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Management from Virginia State University, a Master of Science in Computer Information Systems from the University of Maryland University College, and a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion certification from Cornell University.
Crowned Miss USA in 2016, Deshauna became the first soldier to hold the title, using her platform to advocate for soldiers suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and mental health challenges. She has been working for years to ensure that no woman veteran is left unheard or unsupported.
As a sought-after speaker, Deshauna’s ability to inspire, lead, and advocate has made her a trusted voice among Fortune 500 companies, policymakers, and military communities alike. Her unwavering commitment to service is not just a career—it’s a calling, deeply rooted in her upbringing and personal journey as a soldier and leader. Through her work, she continues to champion a future where every woman veteran receives the support, recognition, and resources she has fought so hard to secure.
